How the maths works

DPI (dots per inch) is the bridge between physical size and pixels: pixels = inches × DPI. A 8 × 10 inch print at 300 DPI needs 2400 × 3000 pixels. Going the other way, a 3000 × 2400 px file prints sharply up to 10 × 8 inches at 300 DPI — larger than that and labs must upscale, which softens detail.

300 DPI is the standard because the human eye stops resolving extra detail around that density at arm’s length. 150 DPI is acceptable for large posters viewed from across a room; 600 DPI matters only for fine-art reproduction.
